In the fictional Los Angeles of 1947, “Toons” act out theatrical cartoons in movie studios such as Maroon Cartoon Studios. These “Toons” are animated cartoon characters who are sentient and can walk, talk, and interact with other Toons and humans. Despite the close working relationships between human and Toon, the Toons are seen as second-class citizens and are not allowed to socialize with humans outside of business. Roger Rabbit is a Toon who is the star of Maroon’s cartoons and he is in love with a human woman, Jessica Rabbit.
One night, Roger and Jessica are in an argument and Jessica leaves Roger. Roger goes to a bar and gets drunk, then wanders into the path of an oncoming car. He is saved by Eddie Valiant, a private investigator who hates Toons. Eddie is hired by Jessica to find out who framed Roger for the murder of Marvin Acme, the owner of Maroon Studios and the man who created Toons. Eddie’s investigation leads him to discover that Judge Doom, the head of the Acme Corporation, is behind the plot to frame Roger. Doom wants to destroy Toontown to build a freeway in its place.
