Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a 1964 American stop-motion animated musical Christmas television special produced by Rankin/Bass Productions. It is based on the poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (more commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas”) and the song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” written by Johnny Marks. The special aired on NBC on December 6, 1964, and was sponsored by General Electric under the title Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys. It has been telecast every year since, making it the longest running Christmas special in television history. It is now generally considered a Christmas classic.
The stop-motion animation was accomplished by Japanese animation studio MOM Productions, led by Tadahito Mochinaga. The crew, which included animators Yoshiyuki Ishikawa, Hiroshi Aikawa, and Keizo Murase, worked out of a small studio in Tokyo.
