Fantasia is a 1941 American animated film produced by Walt Disney and released by Walt Disney Productions. The film consists of eight animated segments set to pieces of classical music conducted by Leopold Stokowski, seven of which are performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra. Music critic and composer Deems Taylor acts as the film’s Master of Ceremonies, introducing each segment in live action. The film’s story is introduced in live action scenes set in a studio containing animation equipment. Walt Disney introduces each of the segments in live action, and he is the only live action character in the film.
The film was released to theaters on November 13, 1941, and it was a financial success. It received mixed reviews from film critics, some of whom praised its visuals and others who criticized it for its slow pacing. Fantasia was nominated for three Academy Awards, winning two for Best Original Score and Best Sound Editing.
Since its initial release, Fantasia has been reissued multiple times with different soundtracks. In 1999, Fantasia was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress.
