The Bedknobs and Broomsticks is a 1971 musical fantasy film directed by Robert Stevenson and produced by Walt Disney Productions. It is based on the 1971 book The Magic Bedknob; or, How to Become a Witch in Ten Easy Lessons by British children’s author Mary Norton. The film stars Angela Lansbury as Miss Eglantine Price, an apprentice witch who takes in three children (portrayed by David Tomlinson, Paul Rawlinson, and Roy Snart) during the London Blitz of World War II. When Miss Price’s spell to turn a bedknob into a real boy goes wrong, the children and the bedknob help her stop the Nazis by finding the missing link to the spell: the magical word “Substitutiary Locomotion”. Bedknobs and Broomsticks was Lansbury’s first Disney film and was the last film completely personally overseen by Walt Disney, as he died during its production. The film was released on October 7, 1971, to mixed reviews from critics but was a commercial success, grossing $39 million at the box office.
