Babes in Toyland is a 1934 American comedy film directed by Gus Meins and starring Laurel and Hardy. The film is based on Victor Herbert’s 1903 operetta of the same name. The film was produced by Hal Roach and released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
In the film, Laurel and Hardy play unemployed musicians who are hired by the villainous Barnaby to kidnap little girls and take them to his Toyland factory where they will be made into toys. The boys soon find themselves in over their heads when they realize that Barnaby is actually the evil ruler of Toyland and plans to use the girls to create an army of toy soldiers to take over the world.
The film was a huge success and was one of the highest-grossing films of 1934. It was also one of Laurel and Hardy’s most popular films and is considered one of their best.
