About the Movie
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a 1955 American Technicolor science fiction film directed by Richard Fleischer and produced by Walt Disney Productions. It was shot in CinemaScope and starred Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Paul Lukas, and Peter Lorre. The film is based on Jules Verne’s novel of the same name. It was the first live-action film to be shot in CinemaScope, and the first feature-length Disney film to be released in stereophonic sound.
The film was released to theaters on December 23, 1955. It was a critical and commercial success, earning $8 million at the box office. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, winning two for Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects.
